I HEART Fashion
Introduction –
I start a Fashion Journalism internship on the 1st of September and this is my first assignment.
Why do I love fashion?
I used fashion magazines and music as escapism during my junior high and high school years. With that being said, fashion became a part of my whole being. I believe fashion assisted me with fully becoming who I truly am. Fashion represents expression, attitude, and most of all my identity; state of mind.
Over the years, I experimented with various types of clothes, textures, accessories, and shapes, to create a whole new look for myself. Fashion and having my own style improves my self-esteem, gives me confidence, and also helps me to stand out as an individual. I crave individuality and do not care what others think.
In terms of fashion and my “growing pain” years, I used to be very insecure about my size. I was really skinny and tall. Mostly in African-American culture, “thick” or huge derriere (i.e. Trina, Nicki Minaj, and K. Michelle) is the look most men or my culture approved and accepted with open arms. I could not help my genetic makeup and sought “fashion” for advice. As I flipped through magazines, I found dozens of women with my same shape/height and their outfits looked nice. My fashion icons are Twiggy, Kate Moss, Kelly Rowland, Alexa Chung, Tyra Banks, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Zoe Saldana, Jhene Aiko, Rihanna, and Aaliyah.
What do I hope to learn?
In terms of my career, I would like to be a Fashion Publicist. I believe this internship will help with my writing/blogging skills, but also improve my research and knowledge of fashion.
Favorite Trend for the Fall?
For the fall, dresses with Peter Pan collars, geometric patterns, grays, and neutrals are what’s in fashion. Pencil/mini-skirts are the fall trend I’m becoming very fond of. This outfit is from the Victoria Beckham collection. A little pricey so I will have to do some personal research for something more reasonable. Also, pea coats will never go out of style and I feel so European. I have a Cashmere one I purchased when I was a teenager. Still looks brand new and keeps me warm between the changes of the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons.
Can’t live without clothing item or accessory and why?
Mostly for the winter time and spring, I LOVE BERETS! I purchase these cool hats in different colors. It saves me from bad hair days and keeps my head warm from the cold and the wind.
I absolutely love Converses or “Chuck Taylors.” They are comfortable, cool, and come in all designs and colors. Even when they are old and dirty, they still look cool! I have high-top and low-top pairs.
Favorite Quote? I am NOTHING without God. I use this scripture as inspiration: “I can do ALL THINGS through CHRIST which strengthens me.” Phil. 4:13. Lastly, from the amazing Coco Chanel. Fashion is a “state-of-mind” and you can choose whatever or whoever you want to be…like playing “dress up!”
